D-Link Life Expectancy

My home network has had at its center a D-Link switch for a year and a half now. Recently it has started failing every few days - refusing to route any packets until it was rebooted. Considering the value of a packet-switching device that refuses to route packets, this was troublesome.

I contacted D-Link tech support which (surprisingly) concluded that the device may be malfunctioning. They issued an RMA number. But the resulting process of providing proof-of-purchase (can't they look up the date at which the serial number came into existence and conclude that it can't possibly be any older than that? and what difference does it make since its a lifetime warranty?), packing and shipping the faulty device at my own expense, etc., lead me to purchase a competing device (NETGEAR) for more money just so that I could be free of them. And this new switch'll route 16Gbps full duplex and I'm looking forward to seeing that.
